Exploring The Nervous System of The Horse Woman Who Feels Anxious Riding Outside The Arena
It's incredibly common to feel safe inside the arena, and anxious once you ride outside of it. For lots of horsewomen overcoming a traumatic horse incident the arena can feel like a safety blanked. Many women have shared with me that in the arena, they feel safe and once they ride outside of it, it's like a fog of anxiety descends upon them. Maybe you can relate? Maybe inside the arena you feel like yourself. You can ride. You can think clearly. You can actually enjoy your horse. But the second you leave it, everything changes. Suddenly you’re scanning. What if my horse spooks? What if something happens? What if I can’t get them under control? What if I get hurt again? Your body is preparing for something to go wrong before anything has even happened. The safety blanket is gone.
So you might start avoiding it.
“I’ll just ride in the arena today.”
“I’ll trail ride when I’m feeling more confident.”
“I just need a little more practice first.”
And before you know it, months can pass.
But here’s what I really want you to understand: the fact that you CAN feel safe in the arena is important. Your nervous system is capable of feeling safe horseback. It may have simply learned that certain environments or situations feel more threatening than others. And that means the answer isn’t necessarily forcing yourself farther outside of your comfort zone and hoping eventually the fear disappears.
Instead, we can work with the body and slowly expand its capacity for safety without completely overwhelming it. Maybe today safety is the arena. Then it’s standing outside the gate. Then it’s walking a little farther. Then it’s riding down the road. And maybe one day you look around and realize you’re somewhere you once thought you’d never comfortably ride again.
Healing doesn’t have to look like forcing yourself to prove you’re brave. It can look like teaching your body, little by little, “We’re safe here too.”
If riding outside the arena feels impossible right now, please don’t count yourself out. Where you are today does not have to be where you stay. There is a path between where you are now and where you want to be, and you don’t have to take the whole journey at once.
